For a long time, a Frostproof weeknight had one shape. You worked, you ate at home, you maybe drove to the pier at Lake Reedy before dark, and if you wanted a full sit-down dinner with a room around you, you drove to Sebring or Lake Wales. The daytime civic core on Wall Street kept its own hours. The town's outdoor anchors did most of the social work.
That shape has quietly shifted this year, and it started with one building on Scenic Highway.
The Scenic Highway Room That Changed Weeknights
The Scenic Lagoon Saloon opened its doors in the City of Frostproof at the former P&J Recreation, and the new business has quickly become a hotspot for residents and visitors alike. The address is 33 S. Scenic Hwy., Frostproof, which puts it inside the ten-minute radius most residents already drive through on a normal Tuesday.
The building itself matters more than the menu. The biggest difference from the owners' original Sebring location is the size of the new establishment, which can accommodate between 300 and 400 people. For a town whose downtown block is measured in feet, that is a room large enough to swallow a birthday party, a Little League team, and a couple on a date without any of them feeling on top of each other.
The owner is direct about the gap he saw. "Frostproof needed a place to sit and eat, quiet, with a nice atmosphere," Jon Sowards told the Highlands News-Sun. The business has pool tables and twenty televisions allowing sports fans to watch Sunday games live, and the large bar lets patrons enjoy a drink while a larger kitchen keeps orders moving. Hours run 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, which is the piece that quietly rewrites the evening. Before this, a resident who wanted a proper indoor dinner after 8 p.m. on a Wednesday had a short list. Now the list has one confident answer inside city limits.
The barbecue crowd still has its own anchor. Frostproof BBQ Company sits at 348 Hwy 630 E., open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. The two rooms do not compete so much as split the week: BBQ Company owns lunch and early dinner four days out; Scenic Lagoon Saloon owns the late hours and the weekend crowd that wants a room with music in it.
Wall Street After Six
Wall Street's daytime story is the one everybody already knows. The evening story is quieter and worth paying attention to.
Wall Street Park is a 1.8 acre park located in the heart of downtown and includes two tennis courts, a toddler play area, a merry-go-round, a slide, and a number of other play facilities. Small enough to feel like a front yard, big enough that two families with kids at different ages can both find a corner. In July and August, the shade line under the oaks moves east across the tennis courts around 6:30, which is when parents start showing up.
A block away at Florida Wildflower Studios at 12 E. Wall Street, the summer calendar is the surprise. The Summer Girls Camp runs June 15–19, 2026, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for 6th–12th graders at $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers, with an ocean-inspired theme this year. On off weeks, adult classes fill in. One recent offering, "Is the Florida Swamp House Move-In Ready?" with Sharon, ran Monday, May 4, 1–4 p.m., $40 for members and $50 for nonmembers, teaching how to create the mood, ambiance, and magic of a Florida swamp house.
Two things follow from this. First, downtown now has both a daytime creative use and an evening food-and-play use inside a two-block walk. Second, families who used to drive to Lake Wales for a mid-week enrichment class have a nearer option that costs less than a tank of gas would have.
Lake Reedy Still Does the Heavy Lifting
Nothing on Wall Street replaces the lake. It only reshuffles the hours around it.
Reedy Lake is a natural freshwater lake on the east side of Frostproof, surrounded largely by residences and citrus groves, with no public swimming areas; the city operates a public fishing pier and Henderson Field softball field nearby, and a public boat ramp also exists at Frostproof. The city pier sits at 2 Veterans Way, and the county boat ramp lives at Lake Reedy Park, off CR 630 to North Lake Reedy Blvd. Park hours run 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., which is the number worth memorizing. In July, that 9 p.m. gate closure lands about 40 minutes after sunset, so a 7:30 arrival still buys a full golden hour.
The lake also fishes differently than its reputation suggests. Its surface area runs 3,475 acres at an elevation of 78 feet MSL, with a lake depth around 13 feet, but the shape underneath is what matters to anglers who live on it. Reedy Lake is like a big soup bowl, with sharp drops and many ledges all over the lake in the 10 to 16 foot range. That geometry rewards the resident who has time to learn it and frustrates the day-tripper who does not.
A rough guide to when the lake is most usable in summer:

Spring is the most popular season to fish because of the spawn found when the water gets clearer, and fish that are usually deep in the water come up to search for food, making them more visible. Summer trades that visibility for warmth and traffic, which is why locals reserve the two shoulder hours at each end of the day and leave the middle to the visitors.
An Actual Frostproof Weeknight, Mapped
Because the pieces are all inside a five-minute drive of each other, a Wednesday now has a shape it did not have last summer:
- 5:15 p.m. — Kids to the merry-go-round and toddler area at Wall Street Park while a parent walks a lap around the two tennis courts.
- 6:00 p.m. — Pick up an art project or a class flyer at Florida Wildflower Studios, 12 E. Wall Street.
- 6:30 p.m. — Drive four minutes south to 33 S. Scenic Hwy. for dinner at Scenic Lagoon Saloon before the Friday-Saturday crowd builds.
- 8:00 p.m. — Fifteen minutes at the city pier on Reedy Lake, in time to watch the light drop behind the citrus groves on the west shore.
- 8:45 p.m. — Out of the park before the 9 p.m. gate closes at Lake Reedy Park.
The whole loop is under six miles.
The town did not get bigger this year. It got better at holding a weeknight.
What the Shift Actually Means for a Resident
For most of the last decade, a Frostproof resident who wanted the full spread of a weeknight had to choose between staying home and leaving town. The trade-off was real, and it meant a lot of Wednesday evenings collapsed into the couch.
The 2025–2026 additions do not turn Frostproof into somewhere else. They close a specific gap. A 300–400 seat indoor room on Scenic Highway plus a working creative studio on Wall Street plus a park with equipment for two age groups plus a lake gate that stays open until 9 p.m. is, together, a full evening. The pieces existed before; the missing one was the indoor room after dark. That is now filled by the same building that used to be the former P&J Recreation, which is a Frostproof-shaped answer if there ever was one.
